Out of sorts
My absence from the Blok and failure to post a weekly despatch is explained by the fact that I was out of action last week - a mild dose of Jakarta Stomach, but enough to put the dampers on my regular forays into the depths of Blok M. Deprived of culinary and carnal pleasures I overdosed on good movies and gorged myself on books I’d been meaning to read for ages, as well as tackling some long overdue maintenance of the web site.
I’m now fighting fit again and will be down the Blok like a rat up a drainpipe on Friday night. My intelligence agents tell me that the Sweet Young Things have been out in force this last week, with the re-emergence of yet more old favourites who’ve been away from the Blok for quite some time. I shall report back in the next Blog M posting on the quantity and quality of the fauna in Top Gun.
A very good friend of mine whose legendary horizontal multitasking had suffered a severe and prolonged setback for domestic reasons went down the Blok for the first time in ages last week. He remarks that the place has changed quite dramatically since his days of unbridled dalliance - and when asked in what ways, he replies “the fun’s gone out of the place”.
So here’s yet another long-time Jalan Falatehan trooper who won’t be a regular any more. His departure is not just a loss to the bars (he’s a prodigious drinker), but also to the Sweet Young Things (he averaged at least three a week, on my last reckoning).
During my week of enforced deprivation I discover a new pleasure. As everyone knows, I’ve always had a soft spot for small furry things - so I go out and buy a batch of cute little rabbits to replace the chickens I kept in my back yard until they ended up in the cooking pot after the onslaught of bird flu.
As I feed one of them a whopping great chunk of carrot, I recognize distinct generic similarities to the Sweet Young Things. They’re cute and friendly, like to be stroked and tickled, gaze adoringly at you with big baleful eyes, frisk around playfully with each other when you don’t pay them any attention - but have the edge on the girls because they don’t pester you non-stop for expensive exotic drinks, or exorbitant amounts of taxi money.
Roll on the weekend!
