Yes the street industry of the English 19th century was a broad church - the standard text is “My Secret Life” - an anonymous book which is freely available online and gives a good overview. I’m sure Gladstone was slipping his in, lucky for him News of the World wasn’t around then.

Thanks for another great update - I’ll be spending the first half of July in Jakarta - first visit for ages, can’t wait! I hope there’s some fallen women to be saved..

Thanks Miko for the confirmation that William Gladstone was not just the Grand Old Man but also the Dirty Old Man of Victorian politics. Long, long ago when I studied history the question was still being debated.

I’m not sure there is any doubt about what Gladstone was doing with the girls is there? He even wrote down in his diaries what he was up to and they reveal a man with a serious compulsive sexual obsession.

I read recently that Edward Heath had a similar problem, the “life long bachelor” was warned by MI5 in the late 1960’s about his “cottaging” (qv. George Michael).
