The bars will be open, and there's been a definite move towards easing up on the Ramadan curfew. Last year it was only spoiled by the short-sighted greediness of certain bar owners who kept open long, long after the official closing time.

All you need to do to find out full details is to go to the Blok M web site, choose "Word finder" from the menu, type 'Ramadan' in the search box, and you'll find all the information you need.

Sorry for being persistent but does that mean that I should avoid coming after 13 September? Are bars open during Ramadan?

The *likely* dates for Ramadan this year are 13 September to 11 October. These may vary plus or minus a couple of days, because different Islamic groups have different ways of calculating the actual dates - which are, of course, based on a lunar calendar. Eid Ul'fitri will start immediately after Ramadan, and places of entertainment are usually closed for a full week to be on the safe side. So post-Ramadan revelling will probably start on or after 18 October.

I am thinking of visiting Jakarta in September but don't want to run into the Ramadan holiday. What are the exact dates for Ramadan this year?

The 'Sixth Floor' is a massage facility in the Melawai Hotel that offers a fascinating variety of supplementary services. It is also widely known as the 'Five Plus One' or the 'Four Plus Two', and is highly recommended by many of the Blok M regulars.

Rainy nights in Jakarta. Wow. "Hunting" at the Top Gun, Oscars, even the Club, then back at my villa snuggling and listening to the rain on the roof. Do I ever miss it!!

Just call me an old-fashioned polymath, but I've always had an interest in things medical along with my literary bent.

The specialization of knowledge is the intellectual curse of the twentieth century. C P Snow got it spot on when he spoke of 'the two cultures'. Like Francis Bacon, "I have taken all knowledge to be my province."

why in the world would you know what Dilation and Curettage is? Being well read is one thing really, but you reach a point where that sort of knowledge points to a bit of a twisted interest...
