The problem is one of consistency. Those who don't (or can't) get out every night have to take pot luck - and it seems to me that the Blok is firing more blanks than it used to. Friday night used to be the week's biggie, but can't be relied on as it used to be.

But the biggest bugbear seems to be the late start - unless you set out prepared for action to commence at (or after) midnight, it can be a long wait. :(

Hi Reveller, nice to see you back on here, missed reading your great reports.

I was in the Blok for two nights this week, and on my second night (Wednesday), visited Top Gun at 08-00, same as you say, very empty, but after 09-30 it was very busy, and after two hours on the pool table, one of those nights when the balls kept falling, it would be nearly 10-00, and there was a good selection of very nice girls, plus a bigger contingent of no hopers.

If anyone couldn't have picked one or two stunners from this crowd, I would have loved to have been there during the times you talk about.

On leaving at 11-00, there were ten on more young things sitting outside of every door on the same road side as Top Gun, all seemed very nice, and also very friendly, I don't know if its a Wednesday night when things are good, but I also called a few weeks back on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and it was the same then.

They also still have a good selection on day shift at the 6th floor, but the night shift was a not so good selection wise.

I shall be back there in three weeks, and it will again be a Wednesday, plus Thursday on this occasion, hope the Thursday is as good as my previous Wednesday trips there.

I couldn't agree with you more. The last three times I was in Top Gun there wasn't anyone I knew - and as you say, the old sociability has gone from the place. I really miss the back room - a great place for a pie and a pint, and there was always one of your mates or someone you knew to chat to.

Rev,
I lived in Jakarta in 2000 and 2001. I was in Jakarta a year ago. Jakarta is a much more civil place then before. But Top Gun is not. Back in the day, there was some comradary amongst the patrons. You could always chat someone up. Last year when I was in town, it was totaly different. The patrons were a bunch of young turks who seemed to want to fight and raise hell. I am sure the Sweet Young Things have picked up on this, and the good ones have moved on to better venues. Let's get back to greating each other, having a room at the Gun where the boys could eat and chat, and then move into the action! Keep up the blog...I will be at the Gun some Friday night in early June 2008 and seek you out to provide some beverage.

Thanks for the response Hitesh - it's good to see one of the owners taking an active interest in the Blog at long last. The idea of a place for you chaps to put your side of the story is a good one, so I'll make a new topic in the Blok M Forums. (The Blog isn't the best place for this, though of course everyone is free to respond to posts and comments.)

On the question of accuracy and one-sidedness, in the absence of dialogue there is going to be subjectivity. I strive to distinguish between fact, opinion and speculation.

If you and the other owners were regular followers of the Forum discussions, you'd have seen that the rumour about My Bar closing was mentioned by one of our regular contributors - and subsequently shot down. This is what public forums are all about.

On a more practical note, has it never occurred to the owners to use the Forums and the Blog to keep their customers informed of opening and closing times (especially during public and religious holidays), or to make announcements of impending closures and openings?

Glad to see that somebody at least finds Blok M important enough to report on. Thanks for putting us on the map Reveller ! Just a constructive opinion though...the information at best is not always accurate about what's happening with the bars, as you well know, and at times one-sided. To make things a lot more informative, clear and perhaps exciting, why not have a section where bar owners have the opportunity to answer back or explain. You could call it "Bar Owners Bite Back" (BOBB). I'm sure you can appreciate external and internal influential factors affecting Blok M and the bars, and I can vouch that no bar owner has the intention to just let things on the Blok slide into oblivion. We all work hard for your enjoyment through troubled times and would like the chance to answer your questions so that we can eradicate any misconceptions or misinformation (gossip). Let's keep it polite and above board though. By the way, My Bar was never intending to close, so I'm not sure which informant gave that information.

Wow, makes me glad that I was out & about in Jakarta, 1985-98. Prices then were in the 150 range with 200,000 being the absolute max. But then again this was back in the glory days of the Club, Top Gun, Oscars, Pentagon, and the infamous K Bar. Keep up the good work!!

Dear Reveller,
your comments re price inflation is quite correct. I recently visitted Top Gun and Ds for ten days last fortnight, and every SWT I approached demanded a minimum price of 700, a completely unrealistic price in the circumstances. I never subsequently observed any of these SYTs receive any takers. Bearing in mind the quite expensive drink prices prevailing, these places are not good value any more. A friend who normally resides In Angeles City regarded the quality and value on display as very inferior to what he normally has access to.
